I have been a Police Constable in London, a builder/carpenter/joiner on new building sites and a Production Line Operative in a food factory. In 1993 I attended a meeting in our local church hall when West Devon Borough Council announced a new project, to see if a rural community could generate its own electricity using renewable power. From this point on I was inspired to study for a degree in environmental science with the Open University.

When I graduated I was promoted to Environment Coordinator at Heinz Frozen & Chilled Foods in Okehampton, with my main objective being to install an Environmental Management System (EMS) from scratch and gain ISO14001 accreditation within 8 months. I completed it in six and a half months. This entailed writing the manual, training all members of staff from factory floor to Board level c. 450 people and carrying out audits. We had only two minor non-conformances at the certification audit.
